Hi everyone,

I’ve been seeing a lot of questions about wolf spider sizes, so I wanted to start a thread to compare different species and share some real-world observations.

Wolf spiders (family Lycosidae) vary a lot in size depending on species and region. Some are surprisingly small, while others are large enough to look intimidating.

General size range:

  • Small wolf spiders: about 6-10 mm (¼-⅜ inch) body length
  • Medium species: around 10-18 mm (⅜-¾ inch)
  • Large species: can reach 25-35 mm (1-1.4 inches) body length

With legs extended, the largest species can appear much bigger, sometimes spanning 7–10 cm (3–4 inches).

Examples:

  • Pardosa species : small, fast runners, usually under 1 cm
  • Hogna radiata : medium to large, often around 2–2.5 cm
  • Hogna carolinensis (Carolina wolf spider) : one of the largest in the world, body up to 3.5 cm, leg span up to 10 cm

Why they look bigger than they are?

Wolf spiders have thick legs and bulky bodies, so even medium-sized ones can look huge compared to house spiders. Females carrying egg sacs or spiderlings also appear larger.

What sizes have you seen?

If you’ve encountered wolf spiders in your area, feel free to share:

  • Location
  • Estimated size
  • Species (if known)

Photos and measurements would be great for comparison 🕷️
